Prospective short-circuit current is limited by total source impedance. A transformer-only method provides a transparent terminal estimate from rated current and percent impedance.
Formula
Known source impedance: Isc = V/Ztotal. Transformer terminal estimate: Isc ≈ Irated × 100/Z%.
Worked example
For a 500 kVA, 400 V three-phase transformer, rated current is about 722 A. With 5.75% impedance, the simplified transformer-terminal fault estimate is about 12.6 kA.
How to use the result in a real design
Use this as a screening check that identifies when a formal study is required. A real study models utility contribution, transformer tolerance, cables, generators, motors, X/R ratio and every fault location.
What the result does not prove
This is not an interrupting-rating, protection-coordination or arc-flash calculation. Never approve equipment or labels from this result alone.
