Transformer Calculator formula and engineering interpretation
Transformer voltage ratio follows winding turns ratio, while winding current is derived from VA and voltage. The calculator separates ideal ratio from an efficiency-adjusted primary input estimate.
Formula
Vp/Vs = Np/Ns; Is = VA/Vs; Pin ≈ VA/η; Ip ≈ Pin/Vp.
Worked example
A 230:24 V, 100 VA unit has a 9.58:1 ratio and 4.17 A rated secondary current. At 90% efficiency, estimated input is 111 W and primary current is about 0.48 A.
How to use the result in a real design
Select VA for the load’s apparent power, then check regulation, temperature rise, duty cycle, inrush and rectifier/capacitor charging current with manufacturer curves.
What the result does not prove
This single-phase steady-state model excludes saturation, magnetizing current, harmonics, insulation coordination, short-circuit withstand and protective-device coordination.
